Don’t Be Too Quick To Store Those Snowblowers

According to weather reports, another big snowstorm is headed our way on Friday…so don’t bring those snowblowers in and put them in your storage units just yet. Snow shovels, sleds…all of that can stay where it belongs, right in your garage…for the moment.

But spring is coming. With that in mind, you may want to start thinking about the best ways to pack your snowblower for a season spent in a self storage unit. Here are some steps that you should be sure to take:

Make sure the fuel tank is empty — we don’t allow flammable materials, such as gasoline, to be kept in storage units. It’s a fire safety issue and a policy we enforce strictly to protect you, your possessions, and our staff. You can run the fuel dry — Friday’s snowstorm may give you a golden opportunity — or siphon the tank empty using a squeeze-bulb that you can get at an auto parts store. (The squeeze bulb itself is fine to store in the same unit with your snowblower!) Even if you keep the snowblower in your garage and don’t store it here, you should still drain the fuel tank every spring to protect the carburetor. Gas can damage a carburetor if the snowblower is not being used regularly. The same thing is true for your lawnmower (or any engine), so if you forgot to drain the gas from your lawnmower’s tank last fall–beware that the engine may not want to start in the spring. If your snowblower has an electric starter, remove the key from the switch, and put it in a safe place where it will not get lost — such as a bag that you have affixed to the snowblower’s handle with a clip. Drain the oil out of the snowblower. To do this, remove the drain plug and the oil filler cap. Put a container under the drain plug to catch the oil as it drains. Use a container that has a lid, so that you can save the oil for recycling. Most auto parts stores will recycle oil for you at no charge. Please dispose of the oil...
