The end of an era
So, tonight I did it. I traded in an old friend for a new model. I'd be lying if I said that I was totally ok with this decision. I'm a packrat for a reason...I hate parting with things...doesn't matter if it's the plastic cover that came around a Wizard Owl air freshener or a 13 year old car that was starting to have some serious issue. I feel like I betrayed my car. Don't get me wrong, I love the new car, and I'm sure I'll get over things pretty fast. But I'll miss my Civic. That car saw me through a lot...took me a lot of places. I've only had my license now for 21 years (yeah, I was a little late). I borrowed the folks' car for a while before they traded in the 1987 Buick Skyhawk for an Mazda MPV. The Mazda dealership then turned around and sold the Skyhawk to me. The car worked well, but it rusted out underneath me. The last few years of its life were spent with me either getting the rocker panels repaired, getting the brakes fixed (that was a joy when they gave out!) or getting the exhaust fixed (also not fun). By the time 1997 rolled around, I made the decision to get another car. It just wasn't worth repairing the rocker panels for a 3rd time, just so the car would pass the safety inspection. Went car searching in April/97. Looked at some Mazdas, some Nissans...then went to the Honda dealership (only because my bro wanted to check it out). Test drove the Civic LX and had pretty much decided that was it, when the dealership offered me a demo model EX for the same price. Sold! It had more bells & whistles than I'd originally wanted but I regretted getting none of them. Over the next 13 years, that car served me well. Drove me to Massachusetts in 1998, twice in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007 & 2008. Went to Prince Edward Island almost as many times. Visited more cemeteries than I can count. Drove to and from work - multiple jobs, multiple locations. Had some great times. And, to be honest, until the car hit 10 or so, I spent minimal money on it - regular maintenance,...
