upgrades i can do to a chevy 454 engine?
my truck is a 1971 chevy stepside. i have a 454 chevy engine that is for the most part stock. it only has 45k miles on it. what upgrades can i do to the engine to increase the horsepower? i read somewhere that replacing the "headers" and the "carborator" would do some good. what others could you suggest? what do headers do? thanks
if you want to keep the engine together you need to find out if the block has 4 bolt mains if not i would start there can have splayed main caps installed for around a thousand, big blocks dont like high rpms,so you need to build the bottom end up so it will handle the higher rpm's.any thing over 5700 rpm's with 2 bolt mains the engine wont stay together, than work from there,if going with splayed mains, could also have block clearenced for a 4.250 strock crank, bore the block 60 over with a 4.1/4 strock crank and 6.385 rod,and 11:1 comp piston,go with a 630 - 650 lift roller cam, either a set of edlebrock rpm alum, heads or a set of brodix heads, and a holley intake rpm range from 2500-6500.holley 850 double pump carb, msd ignition system, should end up with a big block chevy with 496 cubic inches and 550 plus horse power..and headers will free up some hp about 10-15 depending on the size of the pipe.and they let the engine breath better..
