How long should a standard Brake Shoe Set last?

The reason I ask is that I took my car (Ford Focus 1.8 TDi 1999) into National Tyres in November last year and they replaced the Brake Shoe Set but again in January this year they have replaced it again but they also used a Brake Fitting Kitt. Obviously

Brake shoes should last about 60,000 miles or more, certainly more than a year anyway.
A brake shoe fitting kit consists of all the springs and retainers for the shoes but isn't always needed as the old ones can be reused.
