L'viv was in Poland, pre- WWII, meaning old Polish architecture- beautiful buildings, not ruined by the war, falling into shambles, no money to keep them up. The language- the letters! The streets were dusty, despite people always sweeping, people in orange vests doing street clean-up (government workers??), picking up garbage, and also business owners sweeping the sidewalk in front of their shops - but just a constant dust blowing around. All the buses and cars looked even older and run down with their permanent dust covering. The exchange rate was crazy. 8 Ukrainian to $1. You could get lunch for less than a dollar! Breakfast for $2!
