The months flew by and then it was June. Benjamin was graduating and would soon be off to college. As he had hoped, he had received a full scholarship to Penn State.

Emma couldn’t be more pleased for him although the thought of her only son being hundreds of miles away filled her with a deep sadness.  She had barely gotten used to her husband’s absence and now Benjamin was leaving. Granted, these last few months he had been a real pain in the neck, but she’d still miss him like crazy when he was gone.

But before thoughts of her son’s leaving reduced her to tears, she rechanneled those emotions into stepping up her hours at the soup kitchen and was warmly rewarded.

“No one’s ever done anything like this for us before.” A man with bloodshot eyes, black matted hair and stained tattered clothes, stood admiring the lengthy dessert table and gave her a sweet smile.

“We usually get what nobody else wants like day old pastries and pudding cups that are past their expiration date. But this…” He rubbed his hands together, his face breaking into a toothless smile as he carefully inspected the array of beautifully decorated cakes, fancy iced cookies and freshly baked pies. “…you made this just for us.”

He leaned in and delivered a spontaneous wet kiss to her check that made her eyes mist with tears. Before she began volunteering at the soup kitchen, she might have rushed into the bathroom and sanitized her check. Now, however, she wore the kiss proudly.

Meanwhile, the clients at the soup kitchen weren’t the only ones who appreciated her skills. Word was getting out around town about Emma’s incredible cakes and orders were fast coming in like the one she had recently designed for the local Garden Club.

It had been shaped like a flower garden complete with a picket fence and dozens of painstakingly formed flowers made from gum paste. The event’s chairperson had lit up like a billboard as Emma rolled it in.

Giving thanks: Houston has a lot to be grateful for

(We'd like to be grateful for more on that score, but we won't go there …).

We're grateful that even as other states' colleges wither, ours are still growing: Rice is erecting new buildings and enlarging its student body; and the University of Houston is thrusting itself, full force, into the academic big leagues.

We're grateful that Bill White has made the Texas governor's race far more interesting. For too long it seemed the outcome would be decided in the Republican primary. Now, suddenly, it's a race to the actual election — and a contest to see not which candidate is farther right, but closer to the middle.

We're grateful for the much-needed new public spaces that our city is developing. For Hermann Park's new, shamelessly romantic Tiffany Bridge. For the new building at the Children's Museum of Houston, which doubled the museum's size. And for the Houston Public Library's revamp of the downtown Julia Ideson Building, which promises to make one of the city's best old buildings far more accessible to the public.
